In 1979, fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon Craig Ferrell, M.D., founded Franklin Bone & Joint Clinic in Franklin, Tennessee — establishing a standard of care that would define orthopedic medicine in Williamson County for decades. By the 1980s, the practice had expanded to include a team of orthopaedic surgeons providing state-of-the-art care to residents of Nashville, Brentwood, and Franklin, and serving as physicians for local athletic teams. For more than 30 years, Dr. Ferrell served as a physician for the U.S. Olympic team — supporting the Equestrian Team and later the Swim Team — a testament to a level of surgical excellence that was recognized far beyond Middle Tennessee.
In 2009, the successful practice was acquired by a larger healthcare organization and continued to thrive under the leadership of its surgeons, now recognized among the best in the nation. In 2017, Williamson Medical Center announced plans for the Bone and Joint Institute of Tennessee — a partnership between the Franklin hospital and 13 orthopaedic specialists, including Dr. Calendine. Following an April 2018 groundbreaking ceremony, the $40 million, 121,252-square-foot facility opened on the Williamson Medical Center campus, purpose-built to accommodate advanced orthopedic surgical procedures. In 2020, BJIT completed an Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC), adding outpatient joint replacement and expanded orthopedic services for patients across Middle Tennessee.

From downtown Franklin or points west, head east on TN-96 (Murfreesboro Road) — if coming from West Franklin, follow TN-96 East through town and continue across I-65. Does BJIT have an outpatient surgery center?
Yes. The Bone and Joint Institute completed its dedicated Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC) in 2020, offering outpatient joint replacement and a wide range of other orthopedic procedures. The ASC is fully integrated into the BJIT campus — with on-site imaging, physical and occupational therapy, and private recovery rooms — allowing most patients to have surgery and begin recovery without an overnight hospital stay.
Is Mako® robotic surgery available at the Bone and Joint Institute?
Yes. Dr. Calendine performs Mako® robotic-assisted total hip and knee replacement at the Bone and Joint Institute of Tennessee. Before surgery, a CT scan is used to create a three-dimensional model of each patient’s unique joint anatomy. On the day of the procedure, the Mako robotic arm works with Dr. Calendine to execute implant placement with a level of precision that exceeds what is achievable with traditional manual techniques.
