What is Mako Robotic-arm Assisted Surgery?

Mako robotic-arm assisted surgery is a technology developed for knee and hip replacement surgeries. It allows your orthopedic surgeon to pre-plan joint replacement surgery using Mako’s software and then perform the operation by guiding the robotic arm to precisely remove bone and cartilage.

Why is robotic technology used as a tool in joint replacement?

This technology allows your surgeon to use a CT scan to create a 3D virtual model of your unique knee or hip anatomy. The uniquely detailed and personalized view enables the surgeon to create a surgical plan that can be adjusted as necessary before and during the joint replacement procedure.

Is the robot actually performing the surgery on its own?
No, the robot is not autonomous. Your orthopaedic surgeon is in complete control of the procedure at all times. The Mako robotic arm acts as a highly advanced tool that executes the surgeon’s pre-approved plan. It provides tactile, visual, and auditory feedback to guide the surgeon precisely within defined boundaries, preventing cuts outside the planned area and enhancing safety.
Because the surgery is pre-planned using a CT scan and a personalized 3D model, the surgeon knows exactly how much bone to remove before making any cuts. The robotic arm’s software creates “virtual boundaries” that prevent the surgical instruments from going beyond the planned area, which protects crucial ligaments, nerves, and healthy bone that might be impacted during a manual procedure.
While long-term data is still being gathered, studies suggest that the extreme precision in implant placement and alignment offered by robotic technology may lead to better joint function, a more natural feel, and potentially increased longevity of the implant.
